Last week on Fired Up Friday, I was joined by Candidly Tiff and author Myron Clifton for a candid discussion about the week in politics—from Texas Democratic primaries featuring James Talarico and Jasmine Crockett, to the ongoing legacy of voter suppression in Black communities.
“When campaigns neglect Black communities during primaries, they create the very voter apathy they later complain about.”
We also examined the dangerous escalation of tensions with Iran, leadership shakeups at the United States Department of Homeland Security, and the launch of the controversial Shield of America initiative in Latin America.
“A war started without a clear strategy rarely ends on anyone’s terms.”
From Reconstruction-era voter suppression to modern political strategy, the conversation centered on a simple but urgent question: Who is really being prioritized in American politics—and who is being taken for granted?
“Primaries were not always about participation. After Reconstruction, they became one of the tools used to keep Black voters from holding power.”
The throughline of our conversation was clear: history still shapes the political realities we are living through today. From the voter suppression tactics born after Reconstruction to modern campaign strategies that overlook the very voters who sustain the Democratic coalition, the lessons are impossible to ignore. At the same time, escalating conflict with Iran and new regional military initiatives like Shield of America remind us that political decisions—domestic and global—carry lasting consequences. If there is one takeaway from this week’s Fired Up Friday, it is that engagement matters. When voters understand the stakes and demand accountability, they reclaim the power that history has too often tried to deny them.
“When campaigns neglect Black communities during primaries, they create the very voter apathy they later complain about.”
“A strong democracy requires more than voters — it requires vigilant citizens.”
