Spring is usually a time of hope and joy. In the Spring of 2025 dark clouds are gathering. It’s a “Dark and Dangerous” time. If you’ve watched the news or seen the political climate change in the country, you know it’s true. As much as people may not like to talk or think about politics, it touches all our lives every day.
You can turn you head and look away but the danger will be coming your way.
This autocratic regime currently controlling the country has politicized everything. There’s not a day that passes when someone in the Administration has not done something that inflicts more harm somewhere in the country or abroad. A fast-moving wrecking ball smashing our rights, freedoms, and any protections that once ensured them has been unleashed on the nation. It’s a scary time.
Anyone who dare speak out is a potential target. I know many are cheering it on, others are dodging the onslaught trying to survive while the rest are sleepwalking hoping it’s a horrible nightmare they will soon wake from. Unfortunately, it is a waking nightmare we are all forced to endure and only we can bring it to an end —break the spell. Exactly how, I’m uncertain but I do know it begins with recognition and understanding of the moment. That moment when fascism starts to rise.
We’re experiencing an authoritarian takeover, exactly what kind is still up for grabs a mix of a kakistocracy, kleptocracy, communism, pseudo monarchy of a self-proclaimed MAGA King to a full on crazed heartless dictator. Spin the wheel on any given day. At this point it doesn’t matter much what we call it; history can sort that out. It only matters that we understand their goal to dismantle a pluralistic democracy.
Project 2025 has come to life after being tested and nurtured in Republican controlled States like Tennessee. My friends and neighbors in Memphis are going through it on so many fronts. I mean we all are for that matter. All the residents of Tennessee are experiencing a special brand of oppression through legislation by extreme conservatives —the Constitutional Make America Great Again Republicans.
For a decade and a half, we’ve been under assault form these extreme Christian nationalist legislators who push their version of the good life on every Tennessean. It’s not a new vision just a revamped version of the same old ideology held by the Confederate rebels who broke away from the nation to hold on to “their way of life” –where slavery, segregation and discrimination were the order of things. That period in history from the 1860’s to the 1920’s seems to be the sweet spot for the “MAGA Golden Age” Rival of Making America Great Again. A time before black people and women could vote. A time when white straight “Christian” men ruled the land.
After the Civil War and many significant social justice movements, white supremacy lost some of its grip on power and eventually was no longer in vogue. Black and marginalized people in this country knew it never went away but we gained some protections for the most blatant or egregious act —accountability through the rule of law. Thanks to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The evil dangerous spirit of white Christian nationalism didn’t die, it lives on today and now those Goblins are once again roaming the land seeking whom they can devour and dominate, rule of law be damn.
Tennessee has become a gathering place for them. Here they can build, network and organize with little resistance. The KKK (Klu Klux Klan) and UDC (United Daugthers of the Confederacy) both founded in Tennessee established the framework long ago—through violence, culture, education, and religion—that underpins today’s white Christian nationalist movement. American Renaissance has been hosting annual conferences in Tennessee since 2012, attracting a range of white supremacist, nationalist, and alt-right figures. Jared Taylor the Founder of American Renaissance and New Century Foundation and his adherents attempt to give this racist ideology a veneer of intellectual respectability.
In November 2024 some Goblins celebrated a 30th anniversary… (excerpt from the website)
“To make America great again,” Mr. Taylor said, “he must make America white again,
The Goblins will not stop until they reach their goal.
Tennessee is playing a prominent role in this autocratic rise and I will be bringing more of that to light and connecting the dots in future essays.
